Wake up oh my soul!

It’s day two of our monthly 3-day fast, and as I was praying today I realized how much my own spirit is not awake to the spiritual realm. I’m not just saying that to throw out some lofty IHOP-ese language, either. Let me explain.

The Bible gives us clear indication on how believers are to know God. All of the same characteristics for apprehending or laying hold of something in the natural are used for the spiritual. For example (my emphasis added):

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”
(Psa 34:8 NKJV)

“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding (heart: NIV) being enlightened”
(Eph 1:17-18 NKJV)

“All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,
Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.”
(Psa 45:8 NKJV)

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
(John 10:27 NKJV)

“Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.”
(Matthew 5:8 NKJV)

Of course the entire Scripture speaks of this subject.

In the same way we have natural faculties to read a book, smell a flower, taste a steak, and pet a cat, we have been given spiritual faculties to know and experience the depths of God. But the curse of sin has caused these faculties within us to lose their sensitivity. It takes a renewing work of the Holy Spirit to awaken them. No amount of good worship CDs, teaching CDs, theology books, or correct doctrine can awaken them. We have to ask Him for help.

I often used to say that the spiritual realm is actually more real than the chair I am sitting in. But I realized I was saying that out of imagination rather than out of experience. Imagination is not faith. Faith is a deep knowing, a bedrock foundation of confidence and certainty that cannot be conjured up by any man’s imagination. A.W. Tozer says “faith creates nothing; it simply reckons upon that which is already there.”

We need our spiritual faculties awakened. We as believers have been given the Holy Spirit so that we might experience that which “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Cor. 2:9) But Paul tells us in the very next verse: “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

We were made to know the very substance of the spiritual and the eternal! We were made to experience God with the spiritual faculties He has given us. In the same way that I can enjoy a beautiful sunset, I was made to enjoy the beauty of God (Ps. 27:4). While the fullness of what we were meant to experience can’t happen until we actually receive a resurrected body, Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit has given us a down payment of those things even now. I want to know what Paul experienced that would cause him to count every natural thing as rubbish compared to knowing Christ. We’ve been sleeping so long… Awaken my spirit, Lord! I want to see and know!

How important is praying in the spirit to growing in Eph. 1:17 in your opinion? Is it something to be engaged in at all hours of the day??

Praying in the Spirit

Anonymous, I'd say praying in the Spirit is definitely an important part of growing in love, meekness, and revelation. However, I would not limit praying in the Spirit to only praying in tongues. I'll explain more what I believe about tongues in a bit.

Paul tells us to walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16), pray in the Spirit (Eph. 6:18), live by the Spirit (Rom. 8:5), and to commune with the Spirit (2 Cor. 13:14). By no means is that a comprehensive list of scriptures on the Spirit, but merely a small sampling of Paul's exhortations to believers to engage and connect with the Holy Spirit in every area of life.

1 Thess. 5:17 encourages us to "pray without ceasing". What does that mean? Certainly Paul is not saying "sit in a prayer room 24 hours a day and say 'I love you I love you' over and over until you fall asleep." Neither is he exhorting believers to pray in tongues for 24 hours a day. I do believe though he is exhorting us to commune and talk with the Lord in our heart, out loud, and with our mind.

So I'll say I would define praying in the Spirit in a much more broad sense (hopefully the way Paul defined it as well) than perhaps most of the "pentecostal" or "charismatic" world would define it today. When we pray "in the Spirit", we are simply sensitive to the Spirit, His leadings and promptings, His desires, and His voice in the place of prayer. When I pray in tongues, I don't want to mindlessly speak into the air. I want to genuinely connect with the Lord in the midst of it.

To the tongues issue for a moment. Paul gives us some insight on the purpose of speaking in tongues in 1 Cor. 14. He says that we speak to God and we speak mysteries in the Spirit when we speak in tongues (1 Cor. 14:2), we build up or edify ourselves (1 Cor. 14:4), and when we speak in tongues our spirit is praying (1 Cor. 14:14). Paul encouraged us to both pray with our spirits by speaking in tongues and to pray with our understanding (1 Cor. 14:15).

Paul makes an outrageous statement in 1 Cor. 14:18. He said he prayed in tongues more than all of the Corinthian believers. I don't believe he was boasting here, but rather speaking it from a place of understanding the tremendous benefits of tongues by embracing it in his own life.

So while speaking in tongues is definitely full of benefits and one of the God-ordained ways to connect with the Holy Spirit (and thus to receive revelation), I think the critical thing to growing in revelation in context to your question is much more broad - it is by involving the Holy Spirit in every moment of your life. Talk to Him with your spirit and with your understanding. He is a real person that lives in you (John 14:17), ask Him to teach you and give you revelation (John 14:26), help you obey Jesus (John 14:15-16), to guide you into all truth and to show you things to come (John 15:13). Ask Him for revelation about the character and emotions of Jesus. He fervently desires to reveal Jesus and help us to obey Him and to love Him more.

Hope I answered your question :)

hey josh,
my name's josh too (i think you have a cool name) and i've been leading a group of intercessors through a 40-day commitment to pray and (take turns to) fast for the campuses -Carleton and St Olaf- and the city of Northfield. i honestly don't remember how i found your blog - but i remember reading your entries on prophetic musicians and going "hmm, this is cool, i'll bookmark it and read it later".
anyway, the long and short of it is i was wondering if it would be okay for me to share your wake up oh my soul post with the group. i think it would be a huge encouragement to them to desire even more of His fullness. we are at day 36! :)
thanks - and blessings!!
His.yours,
josh
