Not-so-super Tuesday

Today is “super Tuesday”, a day in our nation when almost half the country has primaries to elect America’s next president.

As I am praying this morning, I am stirred in my spirit once again about the state of our nation and what we are putting our hope in as a people. If you really look at the problems of our nation, there is no candidate running for president that would have the ability to fully reconcile America’s issues. The message we are called to preach as believers is that ultimately, the kingdoms of men will fail and only one Man will succeed in reigning over the nations. This is the gospel of the Kingdom. We need the Lord to come with revelation on this for the church across our nation today.

Israel is our primary example from the Word. From Samuel’s day, they continually put their hope in human leaders and did not want God Himself as their leader. They did not submit to His law, His ways, and did not heed His messengers and ended up under God’s judgment time and time again. What makes us think America is any different?

Our political process is foundationally broken and irreparable because it is based on one simple premise – that man is inherently good and has the ability to solve their own problems. This leads to a greater concern of mine, however. Could it be that the very thing that we enjoy and love about America leads to its downfall? Is the democracy and the dream of freedom for every nation the catalyst to welcome antichrist on the scene and create the final rage against God that was prophesied by David in Psalm 2?

I cannot put my hope in a broken political process. I cannot put my hope in any one of the candidates running for president today. Our nation needs a deep change of heart. Our only way forward is prayer, revival, and God's mercy.

So is it the church’s moral obligation to vote? I don’t believe it is. It is, however, our moral obligation before a righteous and holy God to pray and petition Him for His righteousness to be established in our nation. I don’t want to be an idolater of any man or put my hope in one candidate over another. I want my heart to be steadily and faithfully longing and asking for the one Man, Jesus Christ, to reign and for His law to go forth from Jerusalem.

But we have to remember that God does not run his kingdom in a vacuum. The Lord has chosen to use real, weak, human vessels to bring forth His purposes on the earth before His Son returns. God is the one who raises kings up and tears them down. His throne is established far above any other throne. He’s the one our nation should be concerned about, not Osama bin Laden or illegal immigrants. We don’t need more rallys to get voters, we need more prayer meetings asking the Lord for righteous leadership.

So before I go and vote at the polls, I’m going to cast my vote today before a higher court, namely the court of Heaven. I want righteousness established in our nation and I want the hearts of the voters to feel the fear of the Lord. I want voters to vote for righteousness today. I’m not praying for them to vote for or for the Lord to raise up Mike Huckabee. Neither am I praying for John McCain or Mitt Romney to be elected. I am not praying for the Lord to prevent Hillary or Obama from becoming the president. I’m not going to put my trust in any other man besides Jesus, and I’m not going to be bold and say that I know exactly which candidate God wants to be president. I want the Lord’s man or woman to be president. The Lord is the perfect leader and knows exactly what our nation needs. Praying for mercy and for righteousness in our leadership is really the only biblical way forward in these elections.

good stuff

Good blog Josh. I've been praying about this issue alot the past few days. I've been a Mike Huckabee supporter since Brownback dropped out. Yesterday I went and saw Ron Paul speak here in Bismarck and I think he had alot of good things to say and I felt myself getting very frusterated because I wanted to vote for whom God wanted me to vote for and all I could hear him say was "it doesn't matter which one you pick" and that frusterated me because I want God to vote so I know how to vote!! But God isn't concerned with these matters, His decrees have all ready been made. I personally think if I don't vote though, I will be missing out on my priviledge as an American. So I'm going to vote for the one whom I think will overturn Roe V. Wade on a federal level. Bless you Josh
Michael

Thanks bro

Hey man, thanks for checking out my blog - glad you were stirred!

I am unashamed to say that my primary duty first and foremost is to where my citizenship is. What may be surprising to some is that I am not first and foremost and American. I am a stranger and a pilgrim here on the earth, and my citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20). Thus my utmost privilege is to steward my rights as a citizen of the Kingdom of God. It's one of the reasons I'm convinced it is not a moral obligation of every believer in Jesus to vote. Being an American is secondary to me. I am unapologetically focused on using my rights as a stranger on the earth that lives in America to further the kingdom I am first and foremost bound to.

Who knows - the Lord could give us Hillary Clinton as the next president. Now that would cause the church to pray, and perhaps that could be God's expression of mercy towards our nation that ultimately ends abortion. I just know that my God-given right as a citizen of the kingdom that reigns above all other kingdoms is to stand before Him in intercession asking for mercy and righteousness in our nation. The way He brings it to pass is up to Him, but rest assured if we ask, He will bring it to pass!

Bless you bro!

Stirring up emotions

Yes Josh, I was talking to my wife lastnight right before we went to ND's first caucus and we had been focusing alot on how we need a prolife candidate to change the laws and we were talking about your blog and how easy it is to not "set our minds on things above" Our prayers effect the Kingdom of God, but what ultimately effects the Earth realm is the Kingdom coming. My vote for Huckabee is temporal, but my leaning on my Beloved is eternal. Thanks for the perspective it changes my prayers from "God raise up Huckabee to, God gives us mercy, let your righteous prevail throughout the land"

Bless you, my friend!
