I guess I thought this might be a fun poll because my worship team has been singing through Philippians 2 the past few months and the latter half of Mr. Doerksen's old song from 1997 had been coming to mind.
While the verse of this song really is one of the most used "calls to worship" in churches worldwide (I'm guessing), the chorus really has some cool lyrics:
One day every tongue will confess You are God
One day every knee will bow
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
Who gladly choose you now.
That's some good theology there. The words never really impacted me much until we really started digging into Philippians 2.
You know, maybe that's not the chorus. I don't know.

I remember hearing this hymn sung by the choir when I was in college, and loving how peaceful everything felt as the women and men echoed each other in the chorus: It is well . . . with my soul.
I also pray this line whenever I hear it: Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight . . .

for this poll, i chose "i exalt thee" (even though i am really found of some hymns right now...like the original version of amazing grace...like chris tomlin's version). i love the song because it puts God and us in our proper places. nowadays i think we have put God too close to earth (if that makes sense) and we think that God is in a battle to be exalted above all gods. but He IS exalted above all gods. so i believe just declaring that truth and agreeing with heaven about it (hence the chorus) does more in a worship gathering than many of the songs out now. there is something about declaring pure truth (especially from straight scripture) in a corporate worship session.

I'm a big fan of the old hymns myself, although I did love Come, Now is the Time...especially with Kathryn Scott singing and that wailing guitar solo at the modulation. YEahh!
There is so much in this song. It's hard to imagine that these messages fit into songs that so many people know and yet somehow they remain hidden until we pause and reflect on their truth.
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
I am also especially fond of "Nothing But The Blood of Jesus".
Those exact lines from Come Thou Fount were running through my head about a week and a half ago... And I was literally telling my roommate about it just yesterday!
Glad you mentioned it! I should have added that on the poll... Since I am the admin of my own site, I will cast another vote for that one :)
"How Great Thou Art" is one I sing at Karaoke on Friday nights. I love it and I sing my heart out! God IS Great!
"It Is Well With My Soul" is the other one. About a month after my husband died (1984) I heard that song in my sleep and also a Bible verse. The song was for me,the Lord telling me that things would be okay. The verse was for my former pastor who needed to hear it. I passed it on to him.
Every time I hear this song I get so excited because I know God gave it to me. Another time a guest speaker came to my old church and after the message he prayed for people. When he got to me he sang "It Is Well With My Soul" and I KNEW he heard from God. - Shook me up!
I also sing this song at Karaoke! I love to worship!

Can you please tell me where I can find this version (the one that Jars of Clay covered)? My friend recently died and it was played at his funeral and I was told it was Jars of Clay but cannot find it anywhere. It had both a man's voice and a woman's voice in it and it would mean so much to me if I was able to locate it or know what cd is is on or anything. Thanks so much!

while i love the old hymns esp "Be Thou My Vision" (Fernando Ortega style) Come, now is the Time to Worship stirs my heart every time to sing out over the city, country that I am in and prophesy to them that NOW is the time to worship Him.
If I've gotta pick one, I'd have to go with 'His Banner Over Me' by Kevin Prosch. Always makes me dance...which doesn't happen often! I'd go so far as to say that the 'album' (sorry, I'm old school) that song was on - 'Save Us Oh God' and 'The River Is Here' (both classic Vineyard) really opened my heart to God in worship. I have 'em both on cassette :) ...but no cassette player!

I Give You all the Honour (Carl Tuttle, 1982). This song moves me every time I hear it. I suppose I like it because its one of those great songs where the verses declare a truth about God, and the chorus is our response to that truth. "You have broken chains that bound me...And I worship You, I give my life to You...etc"
My other favourite is a little known song called "Your Love O Lord" by Peggy Caswell (1990). This again declares truth about God and the chorus is our response:
V1. Your Love O Lord, it reaches to the heavens,
Your faithfulness, it reaches to the skies,
Your righteousness is like,
The mighty mountains,
How priceless is Your faithful love...
CHORUS
I Will exalt You O Lord!
I Will exalt You O Lord!
Praise Your Holy Name,
That my heart may sing to You,
I will exalt You O Lord.
V2. You name O Lord, it is a mighty tower,
Your glory, it covers all the earth,
In Your hands alone,
Are strength and power,
All praise be to Your glorious name...

The music to this is also fab, boogie-woogie piano, makes you want to dance.

That whole last verse is glorious.
Yes!!!
Man, I totally forgot about It is Well With My Soul. I used to get goose bumps all the time on that last verse!
There is something so timeless about many of those hymns...

Be Thou My Vision.
It's an oldie but Jars of Clay does a cover of it that is pretty rad making it a recent favorite.
